The 43-year-old died in Dauphin County during his commute to work, family members said.
Gimmi was pronounced dead around 4:40 a.m. on Route 147 in Reed Township, Pennsylvania State Police said. Investigators said 43-year-old Rindy Martin, of Elizabethville, was speeding at the time of the crash. No charges have been filed as of Saturday.When he died, Stephen was driving the family’s minivan to Penn Tank Truck Wash in Elizabethtown, where he worked for 13 years as a tank wash technician. He was the lead worker on his shift.
“We don’t believe in coincidences. He loved God and he’s with Him now. We’re grateful for that, but we are going to miss him terribly,” said Patricia Gimmi, Stephen’s mother. Patricia Gimmi said Stephen struggled with illness in high school which required him to go back to school to get his GED. None of these struggles affected his work ethic, however. Patricia said Stephen loved being able to provide for his family.
The Gimmis purchased their first home, in Halifax, less than two years ago, Stephen’s wife Priscilla Gimmi said. Around the same time she found out she was pregnant with the couple’s youngest child — perfect timing, she said, since they had just bought a four-bedroom house with much more space than their old Steelton rental home.When the couple’s 7-year-old son learned his dad died, he went outside, looked to the sky, waved and said, “Hi, daddy,” according to Priscilla.
The family loves camp fires and had a fire pit in their Halifax backyard. Stephen sometimes lit a fire in the winter to keep the kids warm while they played in the snow, Priscilla said.
