The Government has shared key details of how people can turn off the upcoming emergency alert
that will be sent out to all phones. It was recently announced that a new Emergency Alerts System, being set up to warn people of situations such as floods and wildfires, would be tested at 3pm on Sunday .
The Government says the new system will be a vital tool in keeping the public safe. But concerns had been raised by some charities about unintended consequences of the system, such as revealing to an abuser that their victim is hiding a phone device, reports the Mirror. But people are now being told by police how to switch off the system. On an iPhone, to turn the alert off, go into settings, open notifications, and scroll down to the bottom and disable the Extreme and Severe Alerts option. On an Android phone, simply search your settings for emergency alerts using the search icon. Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Oliver Dowden said: "At 3pm next Sunday we'll be doing a nationwide test of our new Emergency Alerts system.
"Getting this system operational means we have a vital tool to keep the public safe in life-threatening emergencies. It could be the sound that saves your life."
