The local fire department launched wave runners to help rescue the crew members.
Two boaters aboard a sailboat that ran aground in an Avalon inlet were rescued by local crews during a Tuesday afternoon thunderstorm, officials said.
First responders were called to Townsend’s Inlet shortly after 2:30 p.m. after they learned the 30-foot boat was in distress in the shallow water and was pitching violently in the rough surf as a thunderstorm was bearing down on the area with wind and frequent lightning, according to Avalon Fire Chief Ed Dean.
The Avalon Fire Department launched a fire boat and two wave runners because it was near low tide in the inlet, Dean said. The wave runner crews helped the owner of the sailboat anchor it and were able to get him and his shipmate and take them to the fire boat. No injuries were reported.
