Hundreds of thousands of women who suffered after the state pension age was unexpectedly raised must finally be paid compensation, a long-awaited report says. The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman called on ministers to act swiftly to deal with injustice inflicted because of failings at the Department of Work and Pensions .
WASPI estimates that the average affected woman lost up to £50,000 after the retirement age was upped to 65, and then 66 without proper warning, reports the Mirror. PHSO Chief Executive Rebecca Hilsenrath, said: "The UK's national Ombudsman has made a finding of failings by DWP in this case and has ruled that the women affected are owed compensation. DWP has clearly indicated that it will refuse to comply. This is unacceptable.
This issue started when women born in the 1950s found out they would have to wait longer to get their state pensions. This was because the age for getting a state pension was made the same for men and women in 2010. The pension age will go up again from 66 to 67 between 2026 and 2028.
