Government condemned over ‘unbelievable’ refusal to comply with demand for compensation over pension failures
Women from the WASPI campaign assemble outside Parliament during Prime Minister’s Questions on International Women’s Day The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman said a group of women involved in a test case should be paid up to £2,950 because of the DWP’s failure to
The ombudsman’s report recommends compensation of between £1,000 and £2,950 for a group of six test claimants – level 4 compensation. It falls far short of the amounts campaigners had hoped for. PHSO chief executive Rebecca Hilsenrath, said the ombudsman had made “a finding of failings by DWP” and had ruled that “the women affected are owed compensation”.
“The ombudsman has put the ball firmly in Parliament’s court, and it is now for MPs to do justice to all the 3.6 million women affected,” she said. Senior Tory MP Peter Aldous, the vice-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Waspi issue, said he supported the idea of level 6 compensation – £10,000 for all women affected.
However, pension experts have warned that the Government may eventually set up a “highly targeted” compensation scheme focused only on those who can clearly demonstrate they lost out financially.
