Opinion: Was it a slap heard around the world?: Letters
The slap that keeps on slapping a week on
It’s the slap in the face that just keeps slapping. When Will Smith’s open hand slapped Chris Rock in the face at the Oscars, that’s exactly what happened, period. In all the articles about it since I have yet to read about that incident. Instead, I am reading about the what ifs. What if a janitor slapped Chris Rock? What if it was a bigger guy? It’s about Will Smith’s status, that’s why he got away with it. He ruined the whole night.
The amazing Hollywood producer, talent manager, public relations man and star-maker Jay Bernstein would agree with Mr. Frederick and me. There are still many alive in Hollywood who recall the likes of Jay Bernstein. Isn’t that right, George Hamilton? Many years ago I learned from many in Beverly Hills that good press or bad press is worth a lot of money. Of course risk-taking and showmanship go a long way with Hollywood’s angle to make and/or turn opportunities into big bucks.
I was proud of Will Smith for defending his wife in public and hope all husbands would be protective of their spouses. Chris Rock’s foul mouth was crude, rude and not funny, and terribly out of place at an elegant affair that was supposed to honor Hollywood’s best.
