The Dodgers survive two late homers by the Tigers in a 6-3 win.
LOS ANGELES ― Walker Buehler’s latest outing will not be required material in any course on pitching, but the net effect was no different than his masterpiece in the desert last week.
Buehler threw five shutout innings Sunday in the Dodgers’ 6-3 win over the Detroit Tigers ― his second consecutive start without allowing a run. The right-hander allowed six hits, walked one batter, and pitched with a runner in scoring position in three of his five innings. He threw 92 pitches in all.
Buehler also struck out five batters and was the beneficiary of a double play turned by the Dodgers’ infield. Last Monday in Arizona, Buehler threw the majors’ first complete game shutout of the season against the Diamondbacks. Over the two games, he’s lowered his earned-run average from 4.02 to 2.12.
More than anything, Buehler benefited from the Dodgers’ bats. Freddie Freeman had two of the Dodgers’ eight hits and drove in a run. Mookie Betts scored twice, and seven of the nine batters reached base.Opposite-field singles by Betts, Freeman and Will Smith in the first inning staked Buehler to a 1-0 lead. In the second inning, a throwing error by Tigers third baseman Jeimer Candelario turned a potential double-play groundout by Betts into the Dodgers’ second run.
Cody Bellinger snapped an 0 for 20 slump with a double in the sixth inning, a line drive down the right-field line to score Chris Taylor. All the Dodgers’ runs scored against left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez .
