Darrell moved to the city after finishing a stint in the Air Force and initially worked as a facility manager for a group home and as a support staffer at a crisis house.
Mattison’s mother, Pearl, orchestrated most days around the family. Sunday night was board game night. On a quiet night during the week, they’d visit a library, read to each other and talk about books. If young Alexander got in trouble, he’d have to flip to page 456 of the dictionary, study three words and write paragraphs using the words to display his understanding.
“They did a great job of keeping us blind to what was going on,” Mattison said, “and letting us be kids.”
