A Vernal police officer has begun 'the journey to recovery' after he was struck several times in a shootout with a suspect.
A Vernal City police officer was taken to the hospital after he was struck multiple times a shootout with a suspect on April 28, 2024. Officials said Sgt. Chad Watt sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the incident on Saturday night, leaving him in serious to critical, but stable, condition.
He along with a sheriff's deputy arrived at the home of 27-year-old Rookus R. Curry after Curry reportedly threatened a neighbor with a gun during an argument.Vernal officer struck during shootout with suspect, transported via helicopter During the alleged dispute, Curry pointed the gun at his neighbor's head and said he was "not afraid to die or go back to jail."Authorities stated they returned fired and struck Curry, who fled the scene on foot but was soon found, taken into custody and brought to a hospital in serious to critical, but stable, condition.
Watt has served in Vernal for 25 years.
