Opposition leader declared himself interim president in January; military remains loyal to Maduro

Opposition leader Juan Guaidó, recognized by many nations as Venezuela’s interim president, climbs on top of a vehicle to greet supporters in Cabimas. By Arelis R. Hernández and Arelis R.

Organizers say the effort is modeled, in part, on a presidential run — and on one level, it’s working. At the start of the year, the 35-year-old leader of the center-left Popular Will party was a relative unknown in national politics. Now he commands crowds in many corners of the country and has a national approval rating around 60 percent.

Through April 6, Guaidó’s approval rating stood at 60 percent, according to Datanalisis. Maduro’s was 14 percent. “This is the first time in 20 years that the opposition has come together like this,” lawmaker Juan Andrés Mejía said. “The people were disappointed,” said Dimitris Pantoulas, a political scientist at the Institute of Higher Education and Administration in Caracas. “The military intervention narrative was a bluff. And once it doesn’t happen, you have to do something.”

“For years, the opposition was criticized for diagnosing the symptoms without presenting a solution,” he said. “Now is our chance. We are building a country, not a political party.”
