A selection of the best poems are included in the ‘vanthology’, curated by spoken word artist George the Poet
The UK’s van driver community has launched the world’s first poetry book written exclusively by van drivers. Entries for the Poetry in Motion book have been chosen from a nationwide search for the UK’s most poetic van driver.
“Van drivers and small business owners live a life behind the wheel. I think it’s important their voices are heard and I’m passionate about the power of poetry to help them do that. Unfortunately many people, especially men, are not encouraged to express their feelings through art forms like poetry. Campaigns like this help to challenge that and these poems reveal the hidden depths of creative talent among the UK van driver community.
Dave Haworth, 59, is one of the van driver poets whose poem Here Lies, a heartfelt ode to van life, features in the book. It reads:I’ve learned it’s less about WHAT takes the ride,More, it’s the van in the man. Rochelle Carrey, 33, co-owner of BoujeeBoxes, a florist and event design firm based in Manchester, submitted a poem called Our Flower Powered Van. She said: "We consider ourselves to be pioneers within the industry, redefining outdated stereotypes surrounding the floral and events industries. Our van is a perfect representation of that which is why we wrote our poem."
