Scott Beck, CEO of Beck Ventures, says his company wants to create roughly 4,000 apartment units in North Dallas and for them all to be offered at market rates.
Beck says he still wants the city to put in money to help with redeveloping the area, but the area’s City Council representative says the firm won’t get a dime without a mix of housing options being part of the plan.
In November, the city sent a letter to the property owner demanding that more security be put in place at the site and that what’s left of the building be demolished by June 1. The city could sue Beck Ventures if the deadline is missed. The site for years has been one of the key pieces in the city’s plans to redevelop the International District. The estimated $4 billion project covers 440 acres, including the Galleria Dallas mall. The goal is to create a mixed-use walkable neighborhood that would include a 20-acre park, 10,000 homes, restaurants, arts and entertainment venues, and eventually a DART light-rail connection.
Hirsch also said his client believes the Police Department is lumping in crimes that happen on separate nearby properties to hit the threshold for the designation.
