The settlement was notable because the plaintiffs’ legal team devised a way around a 2005 federal law that shields gun companies from civil liability. They did so by arguing that Remington violated Connecticut state consumer law by marketing the weapon to unstable young men. That’s why lawyers for the Sandy Hook families focused on state consumer law that bars unfair trade practices. The lawyers pointed to how Remington marketed the Bushmaster as a weapon of war, including through product placements in combat video games.
In Instagram messages viewed by the Express-News, Ramos displayed a receipt showing he paid $2,024.28 for the rifle, including taxes. To collect the rifle, Ramos went to a local gun shop, Outback Oasis in Uvalde, and submitted to a criminal background check, which he passed.
