The Utah Jazz have the foundation of a title-contending core in place. Now, they need to build on it.
this season. The average Offensive Rating rank of the last 20 NBA champions is 6th. Maybe there's a blueprint for the Jazz, as built. The 2004 Detroit Pistons were 20th in offense the year they won it all. But that feels like a significant outlier. Eleven of the last 20 champs were top five in offense. Eight were top three.
A once-in-two-decades run isn't impossible. And Gobert can anchor a championship-caliber defense. But a couple upgrades and stylistic changes could push Utah closer to that average-champion offense. He's under contract with the Los Angeles Clippers next season, but they may be intent on big-free-agent hunting as Kawhi Leonard hits the market. Trading Gallo for cap space wouldn't be crazy. And Utah has the flexibility to facilitate such a move. With Favors' salary non-guaranteed for 2019-20, Utah could waive him, and then absorb Gallinari's contract into the resulting cap space.
Right now, Utah starts three non-shooters in Rubio, Favors and Gobert. That makes things extremely crowded for the rolling Gobert and slashing Donovan Mitchell. Defenses don't have to worry much about the perimeter against Utah's starters. If you have both the 3 and the 4 commanding attention, things should become exponentially easier inside.
