The US is expected to announce new, sweeping sanctions against Russia on Wednesday in coordination with G7 nations and the European Union
The official said the sweeping package"will impose significant costs on Russia and send it further down the road of economic, financial, and technological isolation."The new sanctions package will ban all new investment in Russia, increase sanctions on financial institutions and state-owned enterprises in Russia, and sanction Russian government officials and their family members.
Yet the administration's sanctions policy, which is led by a bevy of veterans involved in the response to the last Russian incursion into Ukraine in 2014, is calibrated to cut off critical components of the Russian economy over time and, perhaps most importantly, in a unified and multilateral way.
