Kevin McCarthy has hosted Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in California. This is the first time since 1979 that leaders from the two countries have met on US soil.
‘It is no secret that today, the peace that we have maintained and the democracy that we have worked hard to build are facing unprecedented challenges,’ the president said. ‘We once again find ourselves in a world where democracy is under threat.’
China did not make any official statements about the meetings yet, but the Chinese Consulate in Los Angeles did criticize the event as ‘not conducive to regional peace, security and stability.’
