Astronomer William Herschel discovered Uranus in 1781, although at first, he believed it to be either a comet or a star, making it the first planet to be spotted with the use of a telescope. Particularly with methane, high pressures can split the molecule, releasing the carbon. The carbon then connects with its siblings to form lengthy chains. The lengthy strands are then compressed together to create diamond-like crystalline patterns.
