It's shaping up to be a white Christmas, but the real weather story heading into the holiday weekend isn't as much about snow as it is about high winds and dangerously cold temperatures, according to the National Weather Service, which provided an updated forecast for northern Illinois on Tuesday afternoon.Meteorologists in the agency’s Chicago office continue to fine-tune the timing of an arctic front that will move in from the west.
Though potential snow totals remain difficult to pinpoint — and don't appear poised to reach"snowpocalypse" levels — Birk said there's no doubt that deep cold and strong winds are headed toward the region. Temperatures will plummet Thursday night and remain extremely cold through Sunday.
