Why risky decisions can make someone appear more dominant and prestigious
enhances a person’s leadership appeal. In a laboratory study, we first examined whether people associate risk-taking with leadership. When performing a so-called Implicit Association Test, participants were indeed quicker to connect words related to leadership with words related to risk than with words related to safety . Conversely, participants more rapidly associated words tapping followership with safety-related words than with risk-related words.
We found that risk-taking enhanced perceptions of both dominance and prestige. Perceptions of dominance, in turn, were associated with a reduced willingness to vote for a candidate, whereas perceptions of prestige were associated with an increased willingness to do so. The net result was a preference for more risk-prone political candidates.
We again found that proneness to risk fueled perceptions of both dominance and prestige. These perceptions had different implications for leadership endorsement depending on the context. In cooperative situations, risk-takers were deemed unfit for leadership because the pull factor of their prestige was outweighed by the push factor of their dominance.
