If the 7,000 Pitt employees vote to unionize, it would be the latest public sector union formed in Pennsylvania in decades.

The union election filing with the Department of Labor & Industry now opens up the opportunity for 7,000 workers to vote on whether or not to form a union. More than 50% of the staff must vote to unionize for it to be certified by the National Labor Relations Board.
In 2019, Pittsburgh’s graduate students failed by 37 votes to form a union. Union organizers appealed the ruling, saying that the university engaged in unlawful tactics to encourage workers to vote against unionizing. Officials denied the statement, and in 2021, the state labor board upheld the union’s failure.
