A paedophile from Cumbria convicted of raping a young boy in Albania has been jailed in the UK after befriending families with young kids and 'showering' them with gifts.
He first said he’d “forgotten” to provide details of his sordid criminal past before his barristers told a judge that his religion had been the main motivation for his actions. Judge Nicholas Barker said the defendant had a 'catalogue' of past sexual offending, which included convictions of indecent assault, dating back to 1987 and 1994.He said: “I find that you are not a frank or remorseful person. You continue to seek to hide behind half-truths.
He said: “Police became aware on June 2 that the defendant had befriended a number of African families in Carlisle. He established a connection with more people.”Mr Stanley continued: “He would bring [the children] gifts and they referred to him as Uncle Rob. Mrs Whittlestone said: “He said that he wanted, out of his Christian beliefs, to try to help these families It appears that he did that in many ways.”
