Kherson, in southern Ukraine, is seen as a vital city for Ukraine to capture and for Russia to defend.
Ukrainian forces are closing in on Kherson, while Russian forces are building up defences inside it.
Kherson's location is also important, says Forbes Mackenzie, a former British Army intelligence officer and chief executive of Mackenzie Intelligence Services. "Getting control of the Dnipro river is important because it runs right into the centre of Ukraine," he says.Kherson is the only one of Ukraine's regional capitals to have fallen to Russian forces.
"It would demonstrate to the West that it is still worthwhile spending money on supporting Ukraine and supplying them with weapons."
