It is the last of the six Soviet-era dams on the Dnipro River, a major waterway running through southeastern Ukraine. It supplied water for much of the country's southeastern region, as well as the Crimean peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014. It's not clear if it was deliberate or careless, but they allowed water levels to fluctuate without control - levels were very low in winter and hit record highs in spring.Ihor Medunov is a hunting and fishing guide. The MOD says:"The collapse of the Kakhovka Dam on 6 June 2023 has almost certainly severely disrupted the occupied Crimean Peninsula’s primary source of fresh water, the North Crimean Canal . "It is worth reminding that the nuclear power plant's units have not been operating since September 2022 and, therefore, active evaporation of water from the cooling pond has not occurred since then," the company said.
The flooding inundated towns and villages below the dam, trapping residents and sweeping away houses on both sides of Dnipro, which separates Ukrainian-controlled Kherson province from the southern section that is controlled by Russian forces.
