By Siobhan Robbins, Europe correspondent"Already in Berlin. Weapons. Powerful package. Air defense. Reconstruction. EU. NATO. Security," he tweeted. On Saturday, the German government promised Kyiv further arms deliveries worth €2.7 billion.

Despite the perceived slow start, it is now one of Ukraine's biggest financial and military supporters. Even before Russia invaded, Kyiv was suspicious of Germany's reliance on Russian energy and pursuit of economic ties with Moscow under Angela Merkel. On his first visit since the Russian invasion, President Zelenskyy thanked the German government for its"fantastic solidarity".

The longer the war goes on, the more doubts could creep in, so visits by the world's most watched President showing he's grateful go a long way to shoring up lasting support. Despite Russian claims that Ukraine made 'mass' failed attempts to break through Bakhmut defences in the last 24 hours, their forces regained more than 10 square miles of ground over three days, according to a US think tank.

Separately, the ministry confirmed long-range strikes on Ternopil, claiming they targeted"units of Ukraine's armed forces and ammunition storage sites". Fires ripped through buildings in Ternopil last night, following missile strikes on the home town of Eurovision contestants Tvorchi. The fallout has begun after Russian news outlets, social media accounts and at least one local official reported two warplanes and two helicopters crashed in Bryansk, adjoining northeast Ukraine, yesterday.

The deputy of Moscow's regional parliament, Andrey Medvedev, warned further strikes on aviation assets were likely part of a wider Ukrainian counteroffensive strategy. The home town of Ukraine's Eurovision contestants has been attacked a second time, according to the State Emergency Service. By green-lighting modern battle tanks like its own Leopard 1 and 2, Germany opened the door for a raft of deliveries from allies to Ukraine critical for its planned counteroffensive.More than 600 miles away from Berlin, the state of Russian forces on the frontline has been subject to much speculation over the last few days.
