The pair spoke for almost two hours in a video call as the US sought to deter Beijing from providing military or economic assistance for President Vladimir Putin's invasion
The White House would not be drawn on whether President Xi gave President Biden any assurances that China would not be helping Russia out with military assistance.
On that key issue, it seems, there is no change since US intelligence suggested China could be willing to help out its ally. This is just the latest in a flurry of diplomatic telephone calls between world leaders and their deputies. A senior administration official described the call between the two leaders as"direct, substantive and detailed" but there was no condemnation from China of Vladimir Putin himself or the wider Russian attack on Ukraine.
