Energy companies have vowed to “act fast” to roll out onshore wind turbines across the country after the government reversed its effective ban on the technology in England.
Rules blocking onshore wind development were set out in a footnote to the National Planning Policy Framework, drawn up in 2016.
Once the planning rules are changed, onshore wind will become one of the speediest new forms of electricity generation to get up and running. Planning consent to having turbines generating electricity can take less than a year, experts say. Finding a grid connection is not a straightforward process. Generous subsidies for wind and solar in the early 2010s meant developers rushed to connect new projects, which left a situation where, in some parts of the country, the local grid is at capacity and can’t take on any new generation.
