Holiday basketball tournaments increasingly are held in warm, sunny winter destinations — Hawaii, Florida, South Carolina, the Bahamas, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Mexico.That will change in November, when the first annual Rady Children’s Invitational comes to UCSD’s LionTree Arena over Thanksgiving with four Division I men’s teams from power conferences. The semifinals will be played on Thanksgiving day, followed by the final and third-place game on Friday.
The event was conceived and organized in conjunction with the Holiday Bowl, local tourism agencies and Fox Sports. Rady Children’s Hospital of San Diego is the title sponsor. It has been in the works for several years, with USD’s Jenny Craig Pavilion targeted as the original venue. But USD did not show interest, and 4,000-seat LionTree became a viable alternative.
