Two large wildfires driven by days of strong winds in southeastern Colorado have burned more than 4,000 acres combined as of Thursday morning.
The Fort Lyon fire, burning in Bent County near the community bearing its name, has scorched 2,909 acres since starting Tuesday, said Dawn Sanchez, a public information officer with the Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team 3. The fire is 50% contained.
The start of both fires are described as human caused, and investigations are ongoing, Sanchez said. Further details on the cause of the fires were not disclosed Thursday. No injuries have been reported with either fire. “Any fire that develops will have the potential to spread rapidly,” the weather service warns. “Outdoor burning should be avoided, as well as any activity that may produce a spark and start a fast-moving wildfire.” The red flag warning expires at 7 p.m. Thursday.
