'The Labour Party should always be willing to stand up to injustices and call out wrongs, no matter where they take place or who is responsible'
Two Labour Councillors from Nottinghamshire have resigned after feeling they can no longer support the leader of the political party regarding the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. Councillor Russell Whiting resigned his membership of the Labour party on Tuesday, October 17, announcing his decision in a statement on X.
"The situation in Israel and Palestine is complex. It has been made more complex by the inaction of the international community to take any action on the illegal Israeli occupation, settlement expansion and systematic erosion of the right of Palestinians to live as free people in their own state."He went on to say: "The Labour Party should always be willing to stand up to injustices and call out wrongs, no matter where they take place or who is responsible.
He will now be serving the residents of Colwick as an Independent Councillor. Adding: "I send my solidarity to those grieving in Israel and Palestine, those living in the middle of this nightmare and those around the world campaigning to end the war, end the occupation and bring hope to the men, women and children of Palestine."
"My purpose in becoming a councillor was to make a positive impact on my community and advocate for the most vulnerable. I am deeply horrified by Kier Stammer and the Labour Party’s initial stance on the war crimes being committed against the Palestinian people.
