Turkey's top electoral body has ordered a rerun of the mayoral election in Istanbul, ruling in favor of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's governing party which had challenged the legitimacy, citing alleged irregularities.

Ekrem Imamoglu, the new mayor of Turkey's biggest city, Istanbul, right, and Mansur Yavas, the new mayor of Turkish capital, Ankara, both from the main opposition Republican People's Party, leave Kocatepe Mosque after Friday prayers, in Ankara, Turkey, Friday, April 26, 2019. Turkish authorities confirmed last week Imamoglu as the mayor of Istanbul, ending more than two weeks of recounts of the March 31 vote demanded by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling party.

Ekrem Imamoglu of the opposition Republican People’s Party, or CHP, won the mayor’s race in Turkey’s largest city by a slim margin on March 31, defeating the ruling party’s candidate, former Prime Minister Binali Yildirim. State-run Anadolu Agency said the Supreme Electoral Board ruled in favor of Erdogan’s party and new elections in Istanbul would be held June 23. Private NTV television reported the board voted 7-4 in favor of voiding the earlier vote.
