Newly-released papers show politicians felt the idea would boost tourism and transport links – but it also drew scorn from some Northern Irish Government officials in Stormont
A tunnel providing a rail link between Dumfries and Galloway and Northern Ireland was discussed as early as the 1960s.During his time as Prime Minister, Boris Johnson instructed officials to look into the possibility of a transport link across the Irish Sea – an idea which had the backing of Dumfries and Galloway MP and Scottish Secretary Alister Jack.Papers released by the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland show that the idea wasn’t new.
It stated: “It is felt that such a connection would be of inestimable value to Ulster in view of the high cross channel freight rates and the numbers of tourists which would be attracted to the province in this way.” It came to the fore again in 1964 when president of Technical Studies Inc Frank Davidson wrote to Northern Ireland’s Prime Minister, Captain Terence O’Neill, asking for a meeting to discuss the idea.
