To stop the gun violence, parents and family must step up and show our young people a better and safer way to live and settle their problems.

PennLive Letters to the Editor

The scourge of gun violence in the city of Harrisburg has nothing to do with trust of the police. Many of the victims would not cooperate with the police or identify their assailants because of fear of retaliation from family and friends of the shooter. Still others were bent on revenge, street justice on their own terms.

The unwritten code that runs deep in the criminal community is to not involve the police, regardless of the circumstances. Trusting in the police has nothing to do with stopping the carnage. Most victims in the Patriot-News pieces regarding gun violence were from families heavily involved in the drug culture with the absence of positive role models.

If you are engaged in criminal activity at the time you are shot, the police cannot look the other way. Most of these young men put themselves at risk. I would agree that many were born into a culture not of their choosing. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
