Has Rudy Giuliani always been crooked, or did he only recently lose his mind? To andrewkirtzman, the answer is neither—and both.
of election-fraud conspiracy theories? Had Giuliani always been unscrupulous, or had he lately lost his mind?is Kirtzman’s second biography of “America’s mayor.” The first, published in 2000, sprung from Kirtzman’s years of covering Giuliani for NY1, the city’s 24-hour TV news station. Not long after the first book appeared, Kirtzman was with Giuliani as the World Trade Center collapsed, a shared experience that adds nuance to the new book’s narrative.
Much of what he’s done in recent years has been appalling. From a writer’s point of view? It’s such an epic story. Watching his descent into complete immorality is a very alluring subject.the book’s researcher, and I went through all the records of the impeachment committee and found these text messages between Giuliani andwho was helping him fish for anti-Biden information in Ukraine.
Nope. Nope. It was a completely eye-opening moment. He was devastated by the loss, and she paints a very, very stark picture of his falling into a major depression—drinking, self-pity, and, most importantly, panicked about his fall into irrelevancy. The only way to get the other side is from Giuliani himself, and he didn’t cooperate for the book. He also hasn’t denied that it happened.
I think what persuaded her to break her silence after all these years was being just finally fed up with how much of a villain Giuliani’s loyalists had made her out to be. She just reached her limit on being portrayed that way and wanted to give her side of the story.
