New York Supreme Court Justice Robert Reed determined that Trump's claims that the outlet had engaged in an"insidious plot" to obtain his personal records failed as a matter of"constitutional law." He ordered the former president to pay all attorneys fees and legal expenses for the outlet.Mary Trump, Donald Trump's niece, was also a defendant in the case, but the suit specific to her has yet to be ruled on, according to the Daily Beast.
"It is an important precedent reaffirming that the press is protected when it engages in routine newsgathering to obtain information of vital importance to the public," they added. Reed ruled in his opinion Wednesday that Donald Trump failed to prove any tortious interference, unjust enrichment, or negligent supervision on the parts of the New York Times or its three reporters. Reed also said the reporters' newsgathering was at “the very core of protected First Amendment activity.”
