Reps. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., Jason Crow, D-Colo., Val Demings, D-Fla., and Sylvia Garcia, D-Texas, are seen in Statuary Hall before addressing the media on the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump on Tuesday, January 21, 2020. The first day of the Senate impeachment trial of President Trump delivered a total audience of more than 11 million viewers, according to ratings data compiled by Nielsen. From the opening of the proceedings at 12 p.
Fox News viewership during the 12 p.m. through 5 p.m. time period was well above normal Tuesday, up 91% compared to the same period one year ago, and up 55% compared to the first day of impeachment hearings in the House of Representatives. Compared to the first day of President Bill Clinton’s Senate impeachment trial in 1999, viewership was up a staggering 782%.
Part of the explanation for the huge increase is due to far smaller ratings in 1999 compared to CNN, which dominated first day viewership in 1999 with 1.5 million total viewers, compared to far smaller audiences for Fox and MSNBC . The landscape has shifted in the years since, with Fox News rising to dominate cable news ratings overall.
In prime time Tuesday—dominated by live coverage and analysis of the Senate proceedings—Fox News Channel led cable news with 3.5 million total viewers, followed by MSNBC and CNN .
