Former President Donald Trump criticized the Republican Party Wednesday amid its move to replace House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
“Why is it that Republicans are always fighting among themselves, why aren’t they fighting the Radical Left Democrats who are destroying our country?” he wrote on Truth Social.
After a vote Tuesday, Mr. McCarthy was ousted from his position as speaker with a 216-210 vote. All House Democrats voted to remove Mr. McCarthy, with eight Republicans joining them. “This represents the ripping off of the Band-Aid, and that’s what we need to get back on track,” Mr. Gaetz said after the vote, adding that Mr. McCarthy’s broken promises on the budget and other issues led to his removal.
Rep. Patrick McHenry, North Carolina Republican and chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, was assigned to be temporary speaker.Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Georgia Republican, wrote on X Monday that she agrees with Mr. Gaetz that “things must change,” but that a motion to vacate against Mr. McCarthy will not “effectively create the changes needed” and that it would give “the upper hand to the Democrats.
