A Kia Soul (briefly) escapes the bounds of Earth.
A Tesla owner's onboard dash cam video captured a freak incident on the Los Angeles freeway last week, when a large wheel and tire broke away from a pickup truck, rolled beneath an adjacent, and—because the tire stayed upright—then launched the Kia into the air while traveling at speed. Reportedly, somehow nobody was seriously injured.
The crash occurred on March 23 down the 118 Freeway near Chatsworth. Video shows what appears to be a modified, lifted white pickup truck merging into the center lane, next to the Kia Soul coming up from the left lane. Suddenly, the truck's front-left wheel rips off straight in front of the Soul, rolling ahead in the same direction as traffic. With little time to react, the Soul hits the wheel dead on and the wheel wedges itself under the car.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed the sole occupant of the Kia Soul fortunately didn't suffer any major injuries, according to KTLA. They must have had their seatbelt on! No other details were provided. In who captured the crash on camera claims the vehicle's Autopilot driver assistance system detected and maneuvered the Tesla away from the oncoming wheel, avoiding further high-speed disaster.
