The biggest question surrounding the USWNT has been who will replace Mallory Swanson at the World Cup. With a two-goal performance against Wales, it feels like Trinity Rodman earned the right to start the opener against Vietnam.
A couple great goals off the bench are less of a starting case than Rodman’s greater NWSL body of work, though. And in league play, she has proven that she gives the Washington Spirit a little bit of everything. She might not be better than the players she’s competing for playing time with at any individual skill, but she’s the most well-rounded player of the bunch. No one matches her combination of scoring threat, ability to assist, dribbling, aerial threat and defensive output.
Her position on the field probably has something to do with it. Smith has been playing on the right wing for the national team to accommodate Swanson and has continued playing mostly on the right after Swanson’s injury. She’s spent her entire Portland Thorns career either playing as a left winger or as a central striker who regularly drifts left, then cuts inside onto her stronger right foot.
Rodman is a bit more used to playing right winger, and more effective in the widest areas of the pitch. Crosses are generally low-value passes — and over-reliance on them is bad — but forcing opposing defenses to respect your winger’s ability to beat the fullback to the end line and play them opens up other, more high-value possibilities.
