'It isn’t just a little cheerleader problem. It expands so far beyond that. It’s not just a cheerleader problem. It's a woman problem.'
The NFL has a problem with equal pay. It’s the premise of A Woman’s Work: The NFL’s Cheerleader Problem, which premiered at Tribeca Sunday. In the 80-minute documentary, filmmaker Yu Gu dives inside the hostile work environment the league's cheerleaders face. From sexual harassment to wage theft, women from teams nationwide spoke out about about their mistreatment by the NFL.
Some see the cheerleader’s job as an honor and a privilege. Other observers don’t think cheerleaders are necessary to enjoy the game at all. When Gu created A Woman’s Work, she set out to prove that cheerleaders work as hard as anyone in a salaried position, no matter how you view them. Fields is just one of a handful of NFL cheerleaders who have taken up litigation against their teams. The film also focuses on Maria, who danced for the Buffalo Jills, and her ongoing lawsuit against the organization, which has backing from dozens of former Jills.
“Yu did it right when she named the film A Woman’s Work,” Fields explained to Newsweek. “It’s not just a little cheerleader story, a disgruntled cheerleader not knowing what she was getting into. In the film, it says the NFL is like a microcosm of the world around us. We’re women. We’re mothers. We’re students. We’re daughters. We’re your everyday, little girl in America, trying to work, doing what we love, and we’re not being treated fairly. We’re not being respected.
