Trial begins over the plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer — and we already know the scariest part
; our country is only two generations removed from whispered talk that a Catholic president would dig an underground tunnel from the White House to the Vatican. But this kind of thinking has always been subject to ebbs and flows. Whenever the addled thinking of the fringe has spilled over into the mainstream, it has eventually receded in due course. The paroxysms caused by events like the Red Scare of the 1950s did not linger — they built to their natural climax and then faded away.
It's this aspect of the Whitmer trial that stands out most. The plotters were not long-time friends. They didn't hatch their schemes together at their neighborhood watering hole or bowling league or community association meeting. In fact, according to prosecutors, one of the key organizers of the plot was not from Michigan at all.
