When Buchanan Galleries first opened back in 1999, it set a new standard for shopping, not only in Glasgow, but in Scotland as a whole.
The sprawling city centre shopping palace, which could soon be the subject of a radical revamp, it was announced last September, has changed so much over the years in terms of outlets that it's quite hard to keep track of what's been lost., however, we're able to spin back the hands of time to see which brands were available in the Galleries' store directory in October 2000, when the complex was barely a year old.
The directory displays Buchanan Galleries' original tenants, including Electronics Boutique, Jean Scene, Gymboree and Sports Connection - all of which have since departed the famous shopping centre. What's particularly fascinating is just how many once iconic stores have fallen by the wayside due to the rise of internet shopping, the 2008 financial crash and the coronavirus pandemic.Bay Trading Co was one of the UK’s best-known chain clothing stores at the start of the new millennium, but the 2008 credit crunch hit the company hard, and by 2015 it was no longer trading at Buchanan Galleries or anywhere else for that matter.
