The comments come after Mr Johnson further fuelled speculation that he will try to make a re-run of his leadership of the Tory party, when he told the Commons last week in his final PMQs appearance that it was “mission largely completed – for now”, beforeMore than 7,500 people have signed a petition calling for Mr Johnson to be included as a candidate in the Tory leadership contest, and it has prompted belief that he could emulate his hero Sir Winston Churchill by having two tenures in No10.
The Prime Minister’s former adviser, Tim Montgomerie, tweeted on Friday that his former boss was telling aides that he is planning a comeback.: “He thinks whoever replaces him might be a disaster and we could be back here in a few years’ time having lost a general election looking for someone with the dynamism to propel the party back into power. He thinks he is that person.”
Cabinet ministers who are supporting Mr Sunak and Ms Truss to replace Mr Johnson insisted the PM would not be staging a return in the future. Welsh Secretary Robert Buckland, who is backing the Sunak camp told LBC: “I’ve learned to expect the unexpected… but in modern politics there are very few, if any, second chances.”
Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey, who is chairing Team Truss’s bid for power, made similar assurances that Mr Johnson would not be planning a rerun of his leadership.
