Therese Coffey, who was Deputy Prime Minister during Liz Truss’ disastrous 49-day gig as Prime Minister last autumn, also slammed motorists who drove into flood water.

The Tory environment minister has been criticised after blaming the torrential flooding that has caused devastation across the country on "rain coming from the wrong direction."

“We have got that pretty much down to a fine art. This was rain coming from the other way and we don't have quite as much experience on that and therefore our accuracy of predicting where such heavy rain would fall was not to the same degree as if it had been." She said: “That is still the major source, I’m afraid, of mortality when it comes to flooding, are people driving into flood water. I just want to encourage people to avoid it as they are not only potentially writing off their car but it can lead to that fatal thing.”

Reports of floods to the Environment Agency reached the highest level since 2015/16 at the peak of Storm Babet, MPs have been told.
