The Conservatives are braced to lose as many as 1,000 seats in next month's polls amid fears the 'chaos' of last year has put off Tory voters
One Tory source who has spent the last two weeks on the road campaigning said that the only “potential positive story” was likely to come from the North East, where the Tories could hold their own against a far more gloomier picture across the rest of the country.
Research by local election experts Colin Rallings and Michael Thrasher, of Nuffield College, Oxford, has suggested that the Tories could lose more than 1,000 seats if there was a swing from the party to Labour of around 6 per cent. Nevertheless, next month’s elections are the largest local polls in the four-year cycle with more than 8,000 seats across 230 councils up for grabs, which will give some idea of the nation’s feeling towards the main parties.
