WASHINGTON—Acting Defense Secretary Pat Shanahan said Thursday that he has accepted the findings of an investigation into a flawed Special Forces mission in Africa in 2017 that left four soldiers dead, and that after a review, he wouldn’t punish top-ranking officers involved.
The Pentagon released its definitive report on the mission in Niger and the many shortcomings that led to an ambush of the Green Beret detachment by militants. Along with the detailed findings, the Pentagon said that nine of the men directly involved...A report on the 2017 Niger ambush released by the Pentagon last year concluded that poor training, complacency and excessive risk led to the Ill-fated mission.
