The Top Gun 2 Maverick and Penny storyline featured some serious changes that came up halfway through filming, according to director Joseph Kosinski.
Decades of history between Penny and Maverick were changed halfway through filming Top Gun: Maverick. Taking place more than 30 years after the original Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick continues the story of Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell , a Naval aviator and flight instructor assigned to a perilous mission to eliminate a rogue uranium plant.
Though Penny wasn't in Top Gun, her role in Top Gun: Maverick is significant, as she plays Maverick's on-and-off-again love interest, who joins him after the film is said and done. Years of will-they-won't-they conflicts are resolved, though their tumultuous love story was only added to Top Gun: Maverick at the tail end of production, according to Kosinski, as they were originally never romantically involved at all in prior years.
