Tomlinson: Electricity bills are so high you may wish for a blackout
TOMLINSON’S TAKE:Twenty-two years ago, state lawmakers introduced a competitive market to generate and deliver electricity to most Texans. Our elected representatives promised that by allowing generators to compete to provide the cheapest volts, consumers would save money and experience better reliability than the old system where local governments anointed a company to act as a regulated monopoly.
Years of excessive profiteering, low investment, and system decay have taken their toll because for-profit companies will not invest one penny more than they must. And our elected representatives did not ask them to do nearly enough over the last two decades.
