ByOof. Tough week for Tom Malinowski. On the heels of the census, New Jersey has just finished its redistricting process and ol’ Tom is taking one for the team. In the horse-trading that is partisan redistricting, Malinowski came up lame. In exchange for shoring up several other districts as Democratic safe harbors, Malinowski was tossed into the volcano, a sacrifice to the electoral gods to ensure a bountiful future harvest.
Back to Malinowski, the newly drawn district is going to make winning there as a Democrat a decidedly uphill battle. The new favorite in the 7th District is the too often disappointing Tom Kean Jr. May the best man win. Kean Jr., a former centrist who has rebranded himself as comfortably Trump-adjacent these past few years, has a much more favorable demographic path to Congress with the shiny new, redrawn district. Malinowski will likely face the dual headwinds of unfavorable demos and a projected red wave fueled by inflation, pandemic woes, etc. On the bright side, he is running against Tom Kean Jr.
