Michigan linebacker Junior Colson has come a long way from Haiti and will lead the defense in the Fiesta Bowl.
When Michigan defensive coordinator Jesse Minter thinks of Junior Colson as a person, he thinks of his fun, easygoing personality. But when Minter sees Colson on the field at middle linebacker, he knows a switch has been turned on.
“He doesn’t get rattled and he doesn’t take himself too seriously, even though he wants to be really good,” Minter said. “It’s kind of a unique quality that nothing bothers him, especially in football where a good play can happen or a bad play can happen.” “I thought it was a great transition, it’s all in the Lord to be able to bless me with so much and being able to allow me with an awesome new family that took me in and allowed me to flourish,” Colson said.Colson returned the favor as a welcoming presence for Minter when he took the defensive coordinator job this season. Minter, who held the same job at Vanderbilt, lived just five minutes away from Colson’s family in Tennessee.
“He’s like a robot,” defensive tackle Mazi Smith said. “He could have a broken wrist or a broken ankle, but nothing is keeping him off the field. He isn’t going nowhere. To be so young, he’s a special guy. He’s tough. The second he got on the field, you could see he was different and he made this defense different singlehandedly.”
