TikTok’s new filter is a gift to predators | Opinion
As we say at Bark, if there’s a platform that allows messaging, there will be predators on it. It’s an unfortunate truth about the digital age — whether it’s a social media app or something unexpected like a fitness tracking app. The most frightening prospect is that it takes
for a predator to bond with a child. Some predators target kids for personal exploitation, while others are part of human sex trafficking rings.Apart from the dangers of potential de-aged predators, filters present other dangers, as well. When kids only see “perfect” — and fake — filtered photos of people, it reinforces the belief that that’s what look they should strive to attain, no matter how unrealistic or unobtainable it might be.
To help educate your child about the dangers that filters present, consider these discussion points: Have you ever talked to someone you’ve never met in real life online? How do you think an adult could act like a kid on the internet? What are the ways you can tell someone is using a filter or a voice-changing app?
Almost any social media tool can be misused by dangerous people. Policy and enforcement can catch some of those threats. But parents, teachers and caregivers have to be informed and alert as well. TikTok ban gets final approval by Montana's GOP legislatureMontana lawmakers have given final passage to a bill banning the social media app TikTok in the state. The measure now goes to Republican Gov. Greg Gianforte. He declined to say Friday whether he will sign it, but he has already banned TikTok from government-owned devices. The state House voted 54-43 to pass the bill, which goes further than bans in place in nearly half the states and the U.S. federal government that prohibit TIkTok on government devices. Supporters of the ban say TikTok can be used by China to spy on U.S. users. Opponents say it violates people's First Amendment rights. A TikTok spokesperson has vowed a legal challenge to the measure's constitutionality.
